THE OLD LIFEBOAT STATION

SKALLINGEN

As one of the country’s youngest land areas, Skallingen holds a very special significance in our understanding of how the marshland develops. Over the past 100 years, these changes have been observed firsthand by science. This knowledge is presented in an exhibition at The Old Lifeboat Station, which also serves as a refuge for anyone caught by high tide. Today, there is parking, restrooms, and a picnic house at the lifeboat station.

Throughout the exhibition period, there are walks and performances at Skallingen, and from June to September, an exhibition in the lifeboat station.

How to be the best guest

Be the best guest when experiencing nature on land

  • Respect the fragile nature around you and stick to the many well-marked paths and trails that show the landscape at its best.

  • Respect that some areas may be closed off during the birds’ breeding season.

  • Remember that you are a guest in nature, and avoid disturbing birds and other wildlife.

  • Pick up any litter you find and take it with you – even if it isn’t yours.

..… or the tide from the mudflats

  • Keep in mind that it is the wind and the tide that determine conditions at the Wadden Sea, and always check DMI before heading out.

  • Check the tide tables carefully before setting out – see the DMI website. The times of high and low tide change daily. Also check the water level forecast on the DMI website, as the wind also affects the tide.

  • Be aware of the mudflats and your surroundings. Large amounts of water can shift the seabed, and areas that were safe to walk on before may no longer be safe.

  • Only go out at low tide, preferably on the falling tide. If in doubt, go out with a local guide.

  • Never walk on the mudflats alone, and do not go further than you can safely return. Always carry a fully charged mobile phone.

  • Pick up any litter you find and take it with you – even if it isn’t yours, and especially if you find it on the seabed.

Accessibility

The exhibition is free and open to everyone. There is no wheelchair-accessible entrance to Blåvand Beach, and the dunes are difficult to access for people with limited mobility. Driving on the beach requires a permit.

Most activities are open to all. Some activities require registration due to participant numbers and planning, while others, such as walks or performances, require participants to be in generally good physical condition. Any special requirements are indicated for each activity.
